Awarded "Best Production Cruiser" by Cruising World Magazine, the Vilm 116 offers exceptional comfort and performance. Built in Lauterbach on the Baltic island of Rügen, the Vilm 116 is beautifully crafted and has a level of excellence usually found only on custom boats. The builder has promoted the boat as a 90/90 motorsailer meaning that the boat offers 90 percent of the performance of both a motorsailer and sailboat. Her designer, Georg Nissen, believes in keeping the virtues of a full blown racing design separate from that which is meant to safely "around the capes". In their performance tests, Cruising World had high praise for many of the features and details of the boat, including her excellent stability in a seaway, the quietness of her engine, performance under sail and the well thought out layout that beckons "blue water".

As stated in the brochure, " The Vilm 116 is a superb mid-sized blue water cruiser. She is fast, comfortable, and extremely seaworthy and is built to withstand the rough conditions of the North Sea. The Vilm 116 is approved for category A (open ocean) and is suitable for circumnavigation but offers shallow draft for coastwise exploration. All materials, fittings, and equipment meet or exceed CE as well as German Lloyd's specifications, the most stringent boat building standards in the world."

Design Background

Awarded "Best Production Cruiser" by Cruising World Magazine in 2002, the Vilm 116 offers exceptional comfort and performance.

Accommodations

From the moment you step aboard, you are immediately impressed with the solid feel of this boat and the extraordinary craftsmanship. The interior is beautifully appointed throughout in rich satin varnished mahogany and it quickly becomes clear that you are in the midst of excellence. The cabin feels warm and luxurious but as with all successful designs, form beautifully follows function. There are plenty fixed and opening ports, numerous well placed hand holds and more importantly, there are no sharp corners to bump or slide into while on a pitching sea. And the more you look around, the more you come to appreciate the forethought that went into this design, especially those aspects so important to blue water passages.

Layout:

Forward, there is a private cabin with a large V-berth that includes a removable insert. The V-berth cushions are finished in Ultrasuade with a matching upholstered ceiling. A varnished mahogany sliding “pocket” door offers complete privacy and with the insert removed, there is ample room to stand and access either of the two hanging lockers that are located port and starboard. Additional shelved storage cabinets are located above the V-berth (port & starboard). Every door and cabinet opens and closes perfectly throughout.

The salon features a lovely teak and holly sole, satin varnished mahogany bulkheads, U-shaped settee to starboard, a straight settee to port and a centerline drop leaf table. With the leaves extended, there is plenty of room to seat six for dinner. Finished in Ultrasuade, the settees are very comfortable with plenty of cushion beneath and behind. The settees easily double as berths with plenty of width and length to stretch out comfortably. Additional storage drawers are located beneath both the port and starboard settees.

The U-shaped Galley is located aft to starboard. The galley is beautifully laid out for working under way and includes twin stainless sinks, stove with oven, refrigeration and plenty of storage for all of the cutlery, cookware and food stores.

The head is located opposite to port. The head is spacious and is designed for offshore use. Clever little openings in the countertop fiddles allow for drainage during showers with the sump itself is designed to drain while on a heel. Yet another little detail that combined with many others, demonstrate the offshore affinity of this design.

Accessible from the aft end of the cockpit is the aft stateroom which has two full size berths to port and starboard and a navigation and TV area on centerline. The aft cabin includes a total of 11 storage lockers and one full length hanging locker.

Mechanical Equipment

A very large (4'x3') cockpit floor hatch provides excellent access to the smooth and quiet Volvo Penta 55 hp Diesel. In addition there are removable side panels in each lazarette as well as a removable panel behind the companionway ladder. There is plenty of elbow room to move about freely making engine maintenance as convenient as it comes. As for performance, running at 2,250 rpm, the engine will push the boat along at 6.7 knots. In a "boat test" conducted by Cruising World, the Vilm 116's power plant was one of the quietest with decibel (dB) readings in the low to mid 80's.
